31st Annual San Mateo County Office of Education STEM Fair & Arts Expo
We hope you’re as excited as we are for the 2018 SMCOE STEM Fair and Arts Expo, happening this Sunday from 4pm to 7pm at the San Mateo County Event Center (Fiesta Hall). We look forward to showcasing and celebrating the terrific STEM and Arts-related projects that San Mateo County students have been hard at work on these past months.
Additionally, we are working together with some awesome partners to make the SMCOE STEM Fair and Arts Expo a fun and engaging learning event for each and every one of you. Here are just some of the activities in store:
Art Takes a Bus Ride: SamTrans is on site to promote the Art Takes a Bus Ride Contest and to answer any and all questions about what our service can do for you. We’ll have the 2017 Art Bus on site for anyone interested in seeing last year’s winning entries.
Cardboard City: Be the architect of your own future! Turn simple cardboard into anything from traffic lights to skyscrapers with just your imagination and a few tools. Contribute your ideas to our large-scale, collaborative engineering project, and be sure to bring your camera!
Create Peace Project: Create a work of postcard art and share a message of hope and peace with the students and teachers of Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
Helium Shark Race: Navigate our RC helium balloon shark and clownfish through a fun-filled obstacle course!
If I Were the President: Take part in a nationwide art project that asks youth under 18 years old what they would change if they were the President of the United States.
Iridescent: Build a machine that sorts data through multiple channels, demonstrating the functionality of parallel processing systems. Also, create a game through a system of electrical circuits with LEDs that respond to different signals, demonstrating how computers make decisions.
Learningtech.org: a San Mateo County-based STEM provider for both in-school and out-of-school programs. Come learn about some of the activities planned for Learningtech's summer camps in July in San Carlos, including interactive exhibits of coding, making, and robotics.
Peopleologie: Try your hand at weaving a backstrap loom, and learn how weaving brings art, math, and science magically together while contributing a few rows to the Warm Winter Blanket Project.
Peninsula Clean Energy: Capture the breeze! Learn how different blade shapes and different wind directions can affect how fast a pinwheel — or a wind turbine — spins. When you blow on your pinwheel, you create your own wind energy!
RAFT: Make-your-own TONGUE DEPRESSOR HARMONICA! People of all ages love the sound of a kazoo. The RAFT harmonica uses a rubber band vibrating between tongue depressors to make sound. Start your own harmonica band today!
Sierpinski Pyramid: Work together to build a giant pyramid using math, straws and string!
SMCOE Environmental Literacy Initiative: Come meet the Environmental Literacy Team and learn about the SMCOE Environmental Literacy Initiative and the One Planet Schools Challenge! We will have a trivia game with prizes and information about projects that can benefit you.
SMCOE Visual and Performing Arts: Make your own Gelli prints, come watch a student hip-hop dance routine, and learn about an upcoming screening of Landfill Harmonic at SMCOE!
IMPORTANT NOTE: Free parking is available in the East Parking Lot, accessible from Saratoga Drive (click here for parking permit and map). We kindly ask that you present this parking permit upon entry. Thank you for your cooperation!
