Westmoor High School in the Jefferson Union High School District recently held a Blooming Boxes event. Blooming Boxes was a first-of-its-kind celebration of Daly City’s diversity! Over 800 boxes were created by students and displayed throughout the school.
Jeff Weathers, a teacher at Westmoor, organized this fun and engaging event with the help of the school community! Mr. Weathers was inspired by his experience at the Yale National Initiative and by the iconic 1960s folk-song “Little Boxes" by Malvina Reynolds. The Westlake neighborhood in Daly City is home to the little boxes that inspired Reynolds’ song.
During the day, students and teachers helped to set up the boxes in preparation for the evening’s festivities. Students were excited to share their works of art with their families and the community! The festival celebrated the diversity, cultures, foods, music, and art of the students. Daly City Mayor, David Canepa, and Rob Keil were in attendance. Rob Keil published a book and documentary celebrating and documenting the development of the Westlake neighborhood.
