Middle School Bicycle Skills Course - date, time and location TBD

Safe Routes to School is teaming up with Wheel Kids to offer a middle school bicycle skills course in San Mateo County. The class will run from 8:30am – 1pm, is open to children between the ages of 11 – 14 and will be held on a Saturday morning in June. The course begins with classroom-style discussion, then moves to skills practice on a protected black-top area, then finishes with a bike ride around the neighborhood, putting those newly learned skills to practice.

The class covers:

  • basic traffic laws
  • basic bike & helmet fitting
  • the most common types of bike crashes and how to avoid them
  • how to position yourself on the road
  • how to let drivers know your intentions and proper hand signals
  • busy intersections

Weekly/Monthly Events

Schools that have had success with special events often expand them into regular activities that occur on a regular basis, such as "Wednesday Walk to School" or "Walk and Roll (i.e., Bike) Day."

Walking school buses, bicycle trains, and park and walk activities are all ongoing encouragement activities.

These weekly and monthly events help to institutionalize positive behaviors and multiply the benefits of the activities, enabling walking and biking to become the preferred mode of travel from home to school.
