Welcome to the San Mateo County Office of Education Special Education Services
Mission Statement: "The San Mateo County Office of Education Special Education Services is committed to meet the individual needs of students in our programs to maximize their learning opportunities and to reach their potential. We provide quality services unavailable through local school districts. We are leaders in innovation and evidence-based practices."
The San Mateo County Office of Education provides Special Education programs for students aged 0-22 whose needs cannot be met solely within their local school district. San Mateo County Special Education programs serve students from most of the 23 districts within San Mateo County by providing Special Day Classes, DIS Services, and Transportation. The majority of students are served on general school campuses. Programs are provided for students with intensive needs, such as severe multiple disabilities, hearing, visual, orthopedic, communication and/or emotional disabilities, and autism. Infant programs serve children birth to 3 years of age with orthopedic, hearing and/or visual disabilities. Services are also available for infants and toddlers with communicative and social skills delays under San Mateo Toddler Education Program and Services (STEPS).
Currently, services are provided to students through the following programs: Early Start Program for Infants and Toddlers, Early Childhood Education, Special Education Services (K-12) and Designated Instructional Services (DIS). DIS includes Adapted Physical Education, Assistive Technology, Audiology, Integrated Hearing Impaired and Integrated Vision Impaired, Orientation and Mobility, and Vocational Educational Services.
Educational services are provided by Special Education teachers with the assistance of paraeducators. Students, families and staff are supported by school psychologists and school nurses. Students requiring transportation for classroom attendance are provided with home to school transportation.
