Board Vacancy Information

The deadline to apply for the San Mateo County Board of Education's vacant seat has passed. Applicants are eligible if they are:

• 18 years of age or older
• a citizen of California
• a resident and registered voter of Trustee Area Seven
• not an employee of the San Mateo County Office of Education or a public school district in San Mateo County
• not disqualified by the constitution or laws of the state from holding a civil office

The deadline to apply for the San Mateo County Board of Education's vacant seat has passed. Applicants must live in Trustee Area Seven. Trustee Area Seven includes Menlo Park, East Palo Alto, Atherton, Woodside, Portola Valley, and a number of unincorporated areas in the county. 

Trustee Area Seven includes schools in the Menlo Park City School District, Ravenswood City School District, Woodside School District, Portola Valley School District, Las Lomitas Elementary School District, parts of the Redwood City School District, and parts of the Sequoia Union High School District.

The deadline to apply for the San Mateo County Board of Education's vacant seat has passed. The applicant selected to fill this vacancy will serve from their appointment until December 13, 2024. A regular election will be held in November 2024 to fill this position for the following term, which lasts four years, and the appointed Board Member would be eligible to run for the Board position.

Please note: This is a provisional appointment. The appointment will become permanent unless a petition calling for a special election is filed with the San Mateo County Office of Education within 30 days of the provisional appointment.

Board meetings are typically held on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 7:00 p.m. in person at the San Mateo County Office of Education, located at 101 Twin Dolphin Drive, Redwood City, CA  94065.

Board responsibilities include:

• Approves policies, regulations, and curriculum for the schools and educational programs operated by the County Office of Education
• Approves the annual budget of the County Office of Education and sets the County Superintendent of Schools' salary
• Receives an annual audit of the County Office of Education's budget
• Serves as an appeals board for the adjudication of expulsion appeals, interdistrict attendance appeals, and charter schools
• Advocates on behalf of education on the county, state, and national level
• Informs local communities about the programs and achievements of the County Office of Education
• Members of the Board of Education also participate in ad hoc or long-standing subcommittees that address the Board's responsibilities and priorities
