TUPE Approach GraphicOn Monday, October 17, SMCOE’s Tobacco Use Prevention (TUPE) team hosted a full day training for District TUPE Site Leads. Thirty Site Leads discussed youth nicotine and cannabis use data, engaged in collaborative activities, and shared resources. Conversations throughout the day were equity-centered as tobacco, vaping, and cannabis use disproportionately impacts immigrants and communities of color.

SMCOE’s TUPE team partners with District Site Leads to implement student prevention curriculum, intervention and cessation programming, staff development, family and community engagement, youth peer-mentoring and leadership development.

TUPE Site Leads are instrumental in the planning of professional development, community engagement events, and outreach including:

  • Cannabis Summit Webinar Series, “The Impact of Cannabis on Youth What Should You Know?” Learn more and register on Eventbrite.
  • ”Cannabis Use: The Role of Parents and Community in Prevention,” November 2, 5:30–6:30pm. Learn more (English | Spanish).

At the training, Site Leads were given copies of the winning “Want to Break from the Vape?” posters to take back to their sites. Each year students in grades 6-12 who live or attend school in San Mateo County design public-service announcement posters to spread awareness about the dangers of nicotine and to recommend cessation tips. Below are the first- through third-place winning posters for 2020-2021.
