Equity, Social Justice, and Inclusion
The San Mateo County Office of Education is resolutely committed to confronting and dismantling systemic inequities, ensuring that all students, educators, and staff are not only supported but actively empowered to achieve their fullest potential. We recognize the brilliance, resilience, and multilingual superpowers that our diverse communities bring to school every day—assets that enrich our educational landscape and are central to our vision of equity. Our work acknowledges the historical and ongoing impact of inequities on communities of color, students with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those assigned a low socioeconomic status (SES), and is rooted in our unwavering commitment to social justice and inclusion for all.
At the heart of our work is the belief that equity is not a passive goal, but an active process of challenging and reshaping the systems that have perpetuated inequality. By critically examining and transforming our policies, practices, and resources, we are dedicated to creating an educational ecosystem where historically and continuously underserved groups see tangible improvements in outcomes, while all individuals are honored for the diverse strengths they bring to our community.
Equity Statement
The County Office of Education has adopted the following Equity Statement to guide its work:
The San Mateo County Office of Education welcomes and embraces individuals from all backgrounds, races, ethnicities, disabilities, gender identities, sexual orientations, immigration statuses, and religions. At the San Mateo County Office of Education, equity means providing every learner aged 0-22 with the education and support needed to thrive in school, career, and life, and every staff member with opportunities to grow and further deepen their impact.
To add additional clarity and direction, the County Office of Education commits to:
- Disrupt inequitable practices and replace them with equity-driven, transparent systems
- Improve outcomes for historically and currently underserved student groups, honoring their strengths and talents
- Continue to educate ourselves so we are better able to confront and dismantle systemic inequities
- Center voices of those who have been historically marginalized and underserved
Equity Action Plan
Equity work is never complete. The commitments attached to our shared equity statement are an ongoing process to assist us in our journey toward a more just society for our children.
The County Office of Education's leadership has developed six areas of focus to guide this work:

Progress on our equity efforts is facilitated by the Executive Director, Equity, Social Justice, and Inclusion, in partnership with executive leadership and a cross-departmental Equity Leadership Team.
