Celebrating San Mateo County’s 2026 California Green Ribbon Schools Award Winners

California Green Ribbon Schools

The California Green Ribbon Schools Awards recognize K–12 schools, school districts, and County Offices of Education that demonstrate exemplary achievement in three key areas: resource efficiency, health and wellness, and environmental and sustainability education. This statewide recognition highlights effective practices that support student engagement, academic achievement, graduation rates, and career readiness.

The County Office congratulates this year’s San Mateo County honorees for their leadership, innovation, and commitment to building a more sustainable future for students and communities alike.

Ravenswood City School District

2026 California Green Ribbon Schools – Green Achiever

Congratulations to Ravenswood City School District on being named a 2026 California Green Ribbon Schools Green Achiever, the program’s highest level of recognition. This distinction is awarded to only the top five applicants across California—and, historically, nationwide.

Ravenswood’s leadership in sustainability and environmental justice demonstrates that transformative climate action in public education is driven by equity, vision, and long‑term commitment, not by wealth. This recognition affirms the district’s dedication to serving students while advancing environmental responsibility.

Menlo Park City School District

2026 California Green Ribbon Schools – Bronze Awardee

Congratulations to Menlo Park City School District, a 2026 California Green Ribbon Schools Bronze Awardee. This award recognizes the district’s achievements in implementing sustainable facilities improvements and districtwide practices that advance environmental education.

This includes maintaining comprehensive nursing and counseling services and community vaccination clinics, using green cleaning products and safer pesticides, creating dedicated spaces for outdoor play and learning, investing in active transportation, and offering project-based learning, family science events and school assemblies, and a science curriculum that embeds California’s environmental principles and concepts.

Green Hills Elementary School

2026 California Green Ribbon Schools – Bronze Awardee

Congratulations to Millbrae Elementary School District's Green Hills Elementary School on earning recognition as a 2026 California Green Ribbon Schools Bronze Awardee. This award highlights a campus‑wide commitment to sustainability through innovative and collaborative efforts.

Green Hills has integrated sustainability into daily school life through educational waste management, Millbrae’s first walking school bus program, and a pilot initiative to reduce single‑use plastics through sustainable foodware. The campus has also implemented infrastructure improvements, including garden beds, tri‑bin composting stations, and rain barrel installations.

A cornerstone of this success is the school’s Green Team, whose hands‑on approach to managing resources has helped shift the school’s environmental culture and inspire student leadership.
