Inspiring the Next Generation of Health and Life Science Leaders

Students listen to a presentation about health and life science careers

On Monday, March 23, the San Mateo County Office of Education co-hosted a Health and Life Science Careers Expo that brought together youth, industry leaders, and community partners to support mental health and well-being while expanding access to diverse healthcare career pathways. More than 100 high school students engaged with professionals from Sutter Health, Kaiser Permanente, Astellas Therapeutics, and other organizations to explore careers across healthcare, biotechnology, and life sciences.

Student feedback reflected the powerful impact of the experience. Nearly all participants reported leaving the Expo feeling well-informed, with the share of students who said they knew “a lot” about health or life science careers increasing more than fivefold. Interest in pursuing a healthcare-related career was universal, and nearly three-quarters of students said these careers now felt achievable for them personally.

Hands-on workshops and direct conversations with industry professionals emerged as the most valuable elements of the day. Students also resonated deeply with messages around mental health, health equity, and representation—sharing takeaways such as “be the change,” “you don’t have to be a doctor to make a difference,” and “education pathways are flexible.”

By centering belonging, real-world experiences, and hope, the Expo empowered students to see themselves as future contributors to healthier, more equitable communities.

You don’t have to be a doctor to make a difference. Every role in healthcare matters.”
