Five middle schools from districts across San Mateo County received a 2024 California Distinguished School Award from the California Department of Education for their progress in supporting student success:

  • Belmont-Redwood Shores Elementary, Ralston Intermediate
  • Burlingame Elementary, Burlingame Intermediate
  • Menlo Park City Elementary, Hillview Middle
  • Portola Valley Elementary, Corte Madera
  • San Carlos Elementary, Central Middle

The California Distinguished School Award program honors schools that achieved exemplary performance on several State indicators displayed on the 2023 California School Dashboard, such as suspension rate, chronic absenteeism, and student performance in English/Language Arts and Mathematics. The State alternates between honoring elementary schools and middle and high schools, with awardees holding their title for two years.

This year, the program honored 293 middle and high schools that made progress in closing the achievement gap and improving student performance. These schools were selected by their ability to demonstrate excellence and growth in academic achievement and ensure a positive school climate. Three of the five schools (Ralston Intermediate, Burlingame Intermediate, and Corte Madera) were also recognized in 2021, with Ralston Intermediate receiving the award for the third time since 2019.

The 2024 San Mateo County awardees will be recognized at a future San Mateo County Board of Education meeting. Visit the California Department of Education’s website to view a list of all 2024 California Distinguished Schools.
