School boards make a powerful difference in our communities and for our students. In San Mateo County, more than 145 board members oversee the education of 90,000 public school students who will determine the future of our county.

These last two years have been a testament to our school board members’ commitment to public education. They have helped keep schools accountable and continuously improve while transitioning back in-person. They also built partnerships and directed resources to respond to their community’s needs. Though they may not always be the ones working day-to-day, face-to-face with our students, board members have worked tirelessly to help our district ensure students continue to learn.

What is the San Mateo County Board of Education?

The San Mateo County Board of Education plays a unique role in the county. In addition to providing oversight of the County Office of Education’s school programs and approving the County Office of Education’s budget, it serves as the appeal board for any expulsion, interdistrict attendance, and charter school appeals. It does not have any direct oversight over other school districts or school boards, however, it advocates for public education and supports the priorities of the County Superintendent to help all students learn and grow.
