A Consortium including the San Mateo County Office of Education and nine school districts was awarded a  $1.1 million Early Education Teacher Development Grant from the California Department of Education. This grant covers a three-year period, July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2025, with a goal of increasing the number of highly qualified early childhood educators available to serve in the California State Preschool Program (CSPP) and Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classes.

Specifically, the award seeks to provide funding for individuals pursuing 24 early childhood education credits, an associate degree in Child Development, a bachelor’s degree in Child Development, or an early education multiple subject teaching credential; and to increase specific competencies for early educators within the CSPP, TK, or kindergarten programs.

The SMCOE Consortium includes: Burlingame School District, Belmont-Redwood Shores School District, Cabrillo Unified School District, Hillsborough City School District, Menlo Park City School District, Redwood City School District, San Carlos School District, San Mateo-Foster City School District, and South San Francisco Unified School District.

The Early Education Teacher Development (EETD) Grant Program is funded in combination with the California PreKindergarten Planning and Implementation Grant Program. The entirety of the California Prekindergarten Planning and Implementation Grant Program was established as a state initiative with the goal of expanding access to classroom-based prekindergarten programs at local educational agencies (LEAs) and planning for the increased number of teachers needed to fully implement Universal PreKindergarten.
