The San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) supports schools and districts in starting and strengthening Genders and Sexualities Alliances (GSAs) to create a welcoming and safe school climate for youth who identify as LGBTQ+. SMCOE also supports educators in embedding LGBTQ+ history, social movements, and current events into their curriculum and instruction.

Sexual Orientation Gender Identity (SOGI) Safe Schools Meetings

All students, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity, deserve a safe and supportive learning environment. Countless reports, however, show that youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or questioning (LGBTQ+) are more at risk of being victims of bullying, experiencing health issues, and attempting suicide. Attend the SOGI Safe Schools Meetings to help students who identify as LGBTQ+ receive the support, affirmation, and safety they need to overcome these barriers and reach their full potential.

Youth Advocacy and Social Summit

The Youth Advocacy and Social Summit (YAASS) is an event organized to specifically to support the work of LGBTQ+ high school students and their allies in an effort to make all high schools safer and more inclusive. It aims to lead, inform, engage, and inspire all students in San Mateo County to be inclusive and supportive of all students.

YAASS 2023 is set for March 14th (middle school summit) and March 16th (high school summit)! (Limited space due to capacity restrictions)
